Speaker of the Seimas Loreta Graužinienė: a statement by the head of “Maxima Latvia” was inappropriate

Press release, 29 November 2013

On her visit to Latvia, Loreta Graužinienė, Speaker of the Seimas, met with Solvita Āboltiņa, Speaker of the Saeima of the Republic of Latvia, and heard the disbelief expressed at the statements made by the head of “Maxima Latvia” in connection with the tragedy in Riga. The Speaker of the Seimas reiterated her condolences to the Latvian people.

“We are perturbed with the situation and the statements made by the private company are humanly incomprehensible. They do not reflect the opinion of the people and state of Lithuania. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Lithuania has already responded to these statements. I regret that inappropriate statements have further hurt the feelings of the Latvian people devastated by the tragedy,” said Loreta Graužinienė.

“I fully appreciate your position and compassion. We are neighbouring countries and we must cooperate and support each other in difficult times,” claimed Solvita Āboltiņa.

The Speaker of the Seimas continued her visit to Latvia by participating in the 32nd Session of the Baltic Assembly. On Friday, Loreta Graužinienė laid a wreath to commemorate victims of the supermarket collapse in Riga.
