Press release, 7 April 2014

Loreta Graužinienė, Speaker of the Seimas, had a bilateral meeting with Eiki Nestor, a newly elected Speaker of the Riigikogu of the Republic of Estonia. Eiki Nestor, who has been in politics for over a decade, visited the Seimas on many occasions. Nevertheless, it is his first official visit abroad in his capacity as Speaker of the Estonian Parliament.

During the meeting, the guest commended Lithuania for its excellent performance during the Lithuanian Presidency of the Council of the EU and showed interest in our country’s experience.

“I am delighted to congratulate you on your becoming Speaker of the Riigikogu of Estonia. May I wish every success to you in your responsible work,” Mrs Graužinienė said.

The Speaker of the Seimas noted that Lithuania and Estonia, jointly with other European Union Member States, had to intensify and accelerate the implementation of the Eastern Partnership objectives.

“It is of particular importance not to lose the momentum gained in developing relations with our eastern neighbours. We must sign the Association Agreements with Georgia and Moldova as soon as possible. I have no doubt that all the three Baltic countries will continue working together in the area of the Eastern Partnership and that we will achieve good results at the next Eastern Partnership Summit to be held in Riga in 2015,” the Speaker of the Seimas said.

This afternoon, Eastern Partnership matters were debated by the Speakers of European Union Parliaments at their Conference held in the Seimas.
