Loreta Graužinienė, Speaker of the Seimas, welcomed the people of the town of Rokiškis and guests from Latvia who all gathered together to celebrate the Day of Baltic Unity. This yearly international event is alternately organised by the parliaments of Latvia and Lithuania in either country, making it the 15th anniversary this year.

“I am proud that Lithuanians and Latvians — industrious, responsible, courageous and ambitious people — are both on a path of democracy. We are visible, audible and respected by the democratic European family and, most importantly, retain our individuality.
The Day of Baltic Unity is not just a holiday. It has a mission important and highly significant to the development of cooperation between Lithuania and Latvia. In today’s geopolitical situation, we need to be united and work together to address the complex challenges with a view to progress and human well-being,” said the leader of the Seimas at the opening of the event.
Then, Inara Mūrniece, Speaker of the Saeima, welcomed the audience in Lithuanian.
Later on, the leaders of the parliaments discussed current political issues, visited Rokiškis Manor House and the exposition of woodcarvings by Lionginas Šepka. Then, they took part in the opening of the 500th anniversary celebration at Ilzenberg Manor and awarded the winners of the table quiz titled Balts and the European Union and held for Lithuanian and Latvian schoolchildren by Rokiškis Municipality.
Furthermore, as a patron since autumn last year, the Seimas Speaker visited Juozas Keliuotis Public Library of Rokiškis District Municipality and congratulated this year’s winner of the Juozas Keliuotis Prize in Literature.
The festive events also brought together members of the Seimas Group for Interparliamentary Relations with the Republic of Latvia and their counterparts from the Saeima, and ambassadors.
