Press release, 17 June 2016
On 17 June 2016, Loreta Graužinienė, Speaker of the Seimas, congratulated Einar Kristinn Guðfinnsson, Speaker of the Althingi of the Republic of Iceland, and the Althingi under his leadership on the occasion of Independence Day.
“In the context of the 25th anniversary of the diplomatic relations between Lithuania and Iceland, which we mark this year, it is my pleasure to recall that the Republic of Iceland holds a special place in Lithuania’s history and in the memory of our people. Let me sincerely wish welfare and prosperity to the people and the Parliament of Iceland, which was the first country to recognise the legitimacy of Lithuania’s aspirations to independence in 1991,” Mrs Graužinienė said and expressed her profound respect to the Speaker of the Althingi.
The Speaker of the Seimas was convinced that the inter-parliamentary relations between Lithuania and Iceland would continue to contribute considerably to cooperation on matters of bilateral and European importance.
