Seimas will deliberate the draft Law on the Register of Foreigners Having an Interest in the Republic of Lithuania

Press release, 13 October 2015

Juozas Bernatonis, Minister of Justice of the Republic of Lithuania, submitted to the Seimas the draft Law on the Register of Foreigners Having an Interest in the Republic of Lithuania (No XIIP-3389) and its secondary legislation. The drafts regulate the registration of foreigners who have an interest in the Republic of Lithuania in the Register of Foreigners Having an Interest in the Republic of Lithuania, the status, establishment and management of the Register, the post of the manager of the Register, and the processing of information and data contained in the Register.

“The submitted draft legislation aims at establishing efficient voluntary measures for the identification and registration of foreigners who have an interest in Lithuania. This will allow the foreigners to receive administrative public and commercial e-services offered by public and private entities. The draft laws seek to reduce the administrative burden and improve the investment climate,” Mr Bernatonis said during the presentation of the draft laws.

The Minister added that the drafts were directed towards the following target groups: individuals who have a business or employment relationship with, or pursue an education in, Lithuania; individuals who have emigrated from Lithuania; and individuals who have been deprived of, or have renounced, the citizenship of Lithuania.

The draft laws were endorsed by consensus after the submission. The Seimas Committee on Legal Affairs was appointed as the lead Committee for the deliberation of the matter. The expected hearing of the draft laws is scheduled for 17 December 2015.
