The meeting between the Speaker of the Seimas, Loreta Graužinienė, and the Slovenian Ambassador to Lithuania, Robert Krmelj, centred on bilateral relations between Lithuania and Slovenia. This year, the Parliamentary Friendship Group with Lithuania has been set up at the Slovenian National Assembly and, according to Ms Graužinienė, this will even more contribute to closer cooperation between the Parliaments of our countries.

The Speaker of the Seimas expressed her satisfaction with the growing cooperation in a variety of fields. Nevertheless, she considered that there still was a lot of untapped potential for cooperation. The volume of trade growing annually clearly shows that both countries have something to offer each other. Close political and economic relations open up opportunities for development of relations in other areas such as tourism, science, education and innovation.

The Speaker of the Seimas and the Slovenian Ambassador discussed the threat of terrorism and the refugee issue. Loreta Graužinienė drew attention to the need for strengthening the external borders of the European Union against a backdrop of the refugee crisis. She also stressed that new challenges should not overshadow our consistent policy regarding Ukraine. “We must continue to give due attention to the implementation of the Eastern Partnership and to providing Eastern Partnership countries with comprehensive assistance,” said Ms Graužinienė.

Ambassador Robert Krmelj heading the Slovenian Embassy in Poland was appointed Ambassador to Lithuania after the Slovenian accreditation to Lithuania had been moved from Copenhagen to Warsaw.
