Congratulatory address by the Speaker of the Seimas, Loreta Graužinienė, at the swearing-in ceremony of the President of the Republic of Lithuania, Dalia Grybauskaitė

12 July 2014

Your Excellency Dalia Grybauskaitė, President of the Republic of Lithuania,

May I express my sincere congratulations on your becoming President of the Republic of Lithuania for the second term in a row.

Madame President, you have received an exceptional mandate which voices the choice and trust of our nation.

I believe this is the best evaluation that can be earned by a politician and country’s supreme power representative.

You will go down in history as the first woman President of the Republic of Lithuania.

It was 88 years ago when the first women started running for President of the Republic of Lithuania, namely Felicija Bortkevičienė, a book-smuggler and a well-known public activist, and Gabrielė Petkevičaitė–Bitė, a writer, publicist and politician. More than 80 years had to pass for everyone to perceive that not only men can lead the country.

You successfully proved that, and thus the nation has given you the mandate to lead the country for one more term.

To each and every of us Lithuania is the greatest value.

It is the criterion we apply when assessing our decisions and goals. It is the criterion we use to assess our deeds. Our common duty is to serve the people of Lithuania with genuine devotion.

We have to admit that there are no small problems or unimportant matters. We all have made a pledge and are responsible for the future of our country.

Harmonious cooperation between all the government institutions is a critical condition to effectively address matters relevant to our country and our people.

Political discussion without diversified opinions is impossible, but our key objective is finding best solutions for Lithuania.

Having acquired still deeper political experience, today you, Your Excellency, are given an excellent opportunity to pursue the work already started.

Our common goal is to ensure that the voice of every person is heard, that the right of every citizen is protected, and that people are able to create the well-being of their own and that of their loved ones in a dignified manner.

Your Excellency,

I wholeheartedly wish you every success in performing the duties of your position and uniting and consolidating the nation for our common work.
