Press release, 21 January 2013

At the meeting with Vydas Gedvilas, Speaker of the Seimas, Paek Young-Sun, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea first of all extended the invitation of the Korean Parliament to visit Korea in response to the visit of Park Hee-Tae, Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea, who visited Lithuania in the summer of 2011.

The Speaker of the Seimas pointed out that the aforementioned visit was especially significant for further cooperation between the two countries. He informed the Ambassador of the Republic of Korea that on 17 January 2013 the Group for Inter-Parliamentary Relations with the Republic of Korea was registered at the sitting of the Seimas. The Group in its new composition will be working in the Seimas for the 15th year.

Gedvilas said that Lithuania was particularly interested in the promotion of exchanges in the areas of trade and investment, tourism, sport, education and science. “The Republic of Korea has attained many achievements in numerous areas and is one of the largest investors worldwide. It is within our interests to attract more Korean businessmen to Lithuania”, the Speaker of the Seimas highlighted.

The participants of the meeting also discussed the opportunities for parliamentary and cultural cooperation. The Speaker of the Seimas commended the recent changes in the Republic of Korea where a woman president was elected for the first time in Korean history.

“We can see a huge potential for Korean investment in various sectors, such as financial and business services, vehicle parts and electronic equipment, ICT, transport and logistics. I have no doubts that the visit of the Seimas Delegation to South Korea would offer a great opportunity to establish closer ties between our countries and people”, Gedvilas said after the meeting.
