Press release, 13 February 2013
During his official visit in Tallinn, Speaker of the Seimas, Vydas Gedvilas, met with President of the Riigikogu, Ene Ergma, President of the Republic of Estonia, Toomas Hendrik Ilves and Prime Minister Andrus Ansip.
The issues of the approaching Lithuanian Presidency of the Council of the European Union, the Multiannual Financial Framework, energy infrastructure projects relevant to the region and security problems were discussed during the meeting.
The President of the Estonian Parliament emphasised the need for a more efficient inter-parliamentary cooperation among the Baltic States. The President of Estonia stressed the significance of the introduction of the euro for the whole region.
“When addressing the most important issues, the Baltic States should keep together,” said Speaker of the Seimas, Vydas Gedvilas. In the discussion about the Visaginas Nuclear Power Plant project, the Speaker of the Seimas highlighted that the matter was currently being considered by the Government of the Republic of Lithuania, however, in his view, the project would have its future only if it is a regional one. He thus invited the partners to get actively involved in it from the very beginning.
