Speaker of the Seimas and the Russian Ambassador Discussed Development of Inter-Parliamentary Relations

Today, Vydas Gedvilas, Speaker of the Seimas had a meeting with Vladimir Chkhikvadze, Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Lithuania. Mr Gedvilas assured the Ambassador that our country is ready to cooperate with Russia on a parliamentary level and informed of the Seimas Group for Inter-Parliamentary Relations with the Russian Federation which is one of the largest groups in the Seimas.

Speaker of the Seimas stressed the need to develop relations with Russia in various areas and encouraged an exchange of official parliamentary visits in the near future. According to Mr Gedvilas, those visits would be a great opportunity to exchange views and address the issues related to the projects being implemented together.

The necessity to strengthen cooperation with the Kaliningrad Region, common issues related to the economy, culture and tourism as well as preparation for the 300 birth anniversary of Kristijonas Donelaitis were among the questions discussed at the meeting.

Mr Chkhikvadze, in his turn, said that equivalent inter-parliamentary group is being established in the State Duma, and Russia is willing to solve mutual problems. Moreover, the Ambassador expressed hope that the Lithuanian Presidency of the Council of the European Union would contribute to the development of mutual relations.
