Vydas Gedvilas, Speaker of the Seimas, has met with Romanian Ambassador Dan Adrian Balanescu.
At the meeting, they have discussed the priorities of the Lithuanian Presidency of the Council of the EU, exchanged views on the political and economic situation in their countries, and touched on bilateral cooperation in the energy sector.
The Seimas Speaker said that the Eastern Partnership was one of the most important priorities of the Lithuanian Presidency and expressed his hope that Romania would be a major partner in shaping the ambitious EU Eastern Neighbourhood Policy. After highlighting that Lithuania and Romania are constant partners in addressing international issues, he inquired about the Romanian experience in connection with energy security.
The Romanian Ambassador said that extraction of shale gas might be possible in Romania and that shale gas exploration would begin in the immediate future.
After commending good inter-parliamentary relations, the Ambassador expressed his belief that the meeting between the Speakers of the Parliaments of both countries would contribute significantly to strengthening of bilateral cooperation. Mr Gedvilas voiced his hope that the meeting would take place in the near future.
