Speaker of the Seimas Vydas Gedvilas met with German parliamentarians

The Speaker of the Seimas Vydas Gedvilas met with members of the Parliamentary Friendship Group for Relations with the Baltic States from the German Bundestag. The Speaker of the Seimas welcomed Dr Christel Happach-Kasan, longstanding Chair of the Friendship Group, and members of the delegation and noted the close relations between the German Bundestag and the Seimas. According to the Speaker, the recent economic and financial crisis has also revealed that Lithuania and Germany have a similar approach to crisis and measures aimed at addressing the consequences of the crisis.

Vydas Gedvilas presented the guidelines of the Lithuanian Presidency of the Council of the European Union to the German parliamentarians and drew their attention to the new Inter-parliamentary Conference on Economic and Financial Governance of the European Union. The decision on the establishment of the Conference was adopted at the last Conference of Speakers of the EU Parliaments in Nicosia (Republic of Cyprus). The Speaker of the Seimas also took note of the issues concerning the Eastern Partnership policy.

The head of the Bundestag delegation thanked the Speaker for the warm welcome and the extensive programme of the visit. According to Dr Happach-Kasan, Germany understands Lithuania’s concern about the energy security problem. The guest congratulated Lithuania on fulfilling the Maastricht criteria.

The meeting discussed the possibilities to further develop the cooperation between Lithuania and Germany in reducing youth unemployment and promoting tourism and in other areas.
