Vydas Gedvilas, Speaker of the Seimas, met with Titus Corlăţean, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Romania. The meeting was also attended by members of the Seimas Committees on Foreign Affairs and European Affairs, and representatives of the Group for Inter-Parliamentary Relations with Romania.
The Speaker of the Seimas presented the preparation for the Lithuanian Presidency of the Council of the European Union, the priorities of the Presidency and planned events. “I invite Romania to take part in the events by delegating its experts, delivering speeches or engaging otherwise. The support of your country for the Lithuanian priorities, which we will hopefully receive, is very important “, the Speaker said.
Titus Corlăţean assured the Speaker of Romania’s support to the Lithuanian Presidency. He also ensured that Romania welcomed the priorities, therefore Romania’s support for them was guaranteed.
The Minister also highlighted the importance of closer economic cooperation between Lithuania and Romania. He indicated that he saw a range of possibilities for increasing the volumes of bilateral trade between the two countries. According to Titus Corlăţean, it is also necessary to strengthen inter-parliamentary relations.
Vydas Gedvilas reminded the Minister that none of the Speakers of the Seimas had paid an official visit to Romania and that, similarly, none of the Chairpersons of the Romanian Chamber of Deputies had ever visited Lithuania. “I am convinced it is high time the speakers of the Lithuanian and Romanian parliamentary chambers met; therefore, we have to spare no effort to make this happen”, said Vydas Gedvilas. Titus Corlăţean, in turn, assured the Speaker that he had been asked by the Chairman of the Romanian Chamber of Deputies to pass an invitation to the Speaker of the Seimas to visit Romania at a time of mutual convenience.
