Speaker of the Seimas Vydas Gedvilas: we call for the EU not to push Ukraine away

Press release, 10 June 2013

Vydas Gedvilas, Speaker of the Seimas, met with Thierry Repentin, Minister Delegate for European Affairs of the French Republic, to discuss topical issues on the agenda of the European Union.

The Speaker of the Seimas stressed the importance of energy independence and enhanced Eastern Partnership. “When we speak about the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement with a country, which pursues EU membership, we have to realise that we should not turn our backs on Ukraine and other countries demonstrating genuine willingness to communicate and cooperate. However, it is obvious that these countries need to do a lot of homework to meet the values the EU is based on”, Vydas Gedvilas said.

The Speaker of the Seimas expressed the hope that France would support Lithuania’s membership of the United Nations Security Council.

The French Minister Delegate for European Affairs highlighted the longstanding relations between the two countries and assured the Speaker that France would support Lithuania during its entire Presidency of the Council of the EU. Thierry Repentin stressed that this semester would be of particular significance to all Member States of the EU.

“I would take particular note of decisions that are to be adopted on the EU budget, youth unemployment and development of energy infrastructure, which are important for every single EU Member State without exception”, Thierry Repentin said.
