Vydas Gedvilas, Speaker of the Seimas, has met with members of the delegation of the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) of the United States of America who are visiting Lithuania.
The Speaker of the Seimas acquainted the delegation with the structure, composition and the legislative procedure of the Parliament. Referring to Lithuanian Presidency of the Council of the EU, Mr Gedvilas looked into the most important activities that had been already carried out and the tasks that were still to be accomplished.
The Speaker highlighted that the United States had continually been Lithuania’s important friend and partner. “We are grateful for your support and assistance in various fields, notably in ensuring national security and creating legal framework. We attach much importance to the quality of our legal acts, therefore, the US experience and advice is always highly appreciated,” he said.
The National Conference of State Legislatures is a bipartisan organisation that serves the legislators and staffs of the nation's 50 states, its commonwealths and territories. NCSL provides research, technical assistance and opportunities for policymakers to exchange ideas on the most pressing state issues.
Senator Bruce Starr, President of NCSL, and Terie Norelli, head of the delegation, former President of NCSL, noted it was the first time the delegation was visiting Lithuania and the Baltic States. “We are involved in active cooperation not only with private sector and non-governmental organisations, but also with people from other countries, seeking to share the good practice of legislation and respective ideas,” Ms Norelli said.
