During his working visit to the United States of America, Vydas Gedvilas, Speaker of the Seimas, met with John A. Boehner, Speaker of the US House of Representatives.
The Speaker of the Seimas extended an invitation to the Speaker of the House of Representatives to visit Vilnius at the beginning of the next year when Lithuania will be marking the 23rd anniversary of the tragic events of 13 January and the Day of the Defenders of Freedom.
“Your country and the Congress have always pursued the policy of non-recognition of the annexation of Lithuania and provided sustained support to the cause of freedom of Lithuania. The US support was equally instrumental after the restored state of Lithuania set out to pursue the objective of NATO and EU accession. Therefore, it would be an immense pleasure if you could visit Lithuania and make a speech at the solemn plenary sitting organised at the Seimas to commemorate the Day of the Defenders of Freedom,” Mr Gedvilas said.
The Speaker of the Seimas believes that Mr Boehner’s visit could be a very important and significant event further reinforcing the longstanding US – Lithuanian partnership.
