Address by Mr Viktoras Muntianas, Speaker of the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania at the parallel meeting of the Members of the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania and of the Deputies and Senators of the Republic of Poland in commemoration of the 3 May 1791 Constitution and EU Membership

At the solemn Seimas sitting the anniversary of the Constitution of 3 May 1791 was marked and the interactive conference entitled “Common Past, Common Future: From the First Constitution in Europe till Common Future in Europe” was held, which was attended by speakers of the parliaments of foreign states and accompanying delegations.

 

During the meeting between the President of the German Bundestag and the Seimas Speaker the common future of Europe was discussed.  Mr. Norbert Lammert was convinced that in the new European Union parliaments of all its Member States should play an important role in a decision-making process.  Mr. Muntianas emphasised a highly constructive presidency of Germany and invited Germany to join the activity of the Interparliamentary Relations Centre.  The purpose of this currently established centre is the provision of support to parliaments of the countries restoring their democracies such as Moldova, Georgia, countries of the Caucasus region.

 

At the meeting with the Speaker of the Estonian Parliament Ene Ergma the Seimas Speaker Viktoras Muntianas expressed support to the Estonian Government regarding the dismantling of the Bronze Soldier Monument.   According to the Speaker of the Estonian Parliament riots in the centre of Tallinn was the act of hooliganism.
