Vice-President of the Armenian Parliament Asked for Support in Building Closer Ties with Europe

Press release, 6 March 2012

The Speaker of the Seimas Mrs Irena Degutienė received the Vice-President of the National Assembly of Armenia Mr Eduard Sharmazanov.

Representatives of the Parliament of Armenia congratulated the Speaker of the Seimas and the people of Lithuania on the forthcoming Day of Restoration of Lithuania’s Independence and recalled that Lithuania was the first country to recognise the independence of the Republic of Armenia in 1991.

Mr Sharmazanov highlighted that Armenia consistently pursues its European integration goals and asked for Lithuanian support and assistance in building closer ties with Europe.

The Speaker of the Seimas focused on the active work of the Seimas Group for Interparliamentary Relations with the Republic of Armenia and underlined that closer cooperation with the members and leaders of this Group could contribute to a better Armenian preparation for European integration and implementation of reforms necessary for this process. Mrs Degutienė also welcomed the Armenian decision, which was made last autumn, to open the Embassy of Armenia in Lithuania and appoint an ambassador.
