7 March 2012
Mrs Irena Degutienė, Speaker of the Seimas, received the newly appointed Ambassador of the Peoples Republic of China Mr Zengwen Liu and Ambassador of Japan Ms Kazuko Shiraishi.
The Speaker of the Seimas observed that the Seimas has an active Group for Interparliamentary Relations with the Peoples Republic of China and invited the Chinese Ambassador to maintain closer contacts with the leaders of this Group and members of Seimas Committees. Mrs Degutienė noticed that Lithuania had witnessed a great number of tourists from China in recent years and added that further development of cooperation between the two countries in the area of tourism was possible.
The meeting with the Japanese Ambassador focussed on energy security projects in Lithuania and planned investment by the Japanese company Hitachi. We welcome the decision of the Hitachi company to open its office in Vilnius and hope that this step will be an ice-breaker opening the way for other Japanese companies to Lithuania, said the Speaker of the Seimas.
The Ambassador of Japan extended her gratitude to Mrs Degutienė for the sympathy and help offered by Lithuanian people when her country suffered an earthquake and subsequently a tsunami a year ago.
