At the Conference of Speakers of European Union Parliaments, Mrs Irena Degutienė, Speaker of the Seimas, Mr Seán Barrett T.D., Ceann Comhairle of the Dáil Éireann, Senator Denis ODonovan, Leas-Chathaoirleach of the Seanad Éireann and Mr Athanassios Papaioannou, Secretary General of the Hellenic Parliament, signed the Declaration of Cooperation among the Houses of the Parliaments of Ireland, Lithuania and Greece in support of the preparation and fulfilment of the parliamentary dimension of the Presidencies of these three European Union Member States for the period 1 January 2013 30 June 2014.
The joint Declaration lays down the commitment to ensure effective communication and co-ordination among the three Parliaments in relation to co-operation with the European Parliament. The aim is also to create a common understanding of the goals and the tasks necessary to achieve them, to strengthen interparliamentary co-operation, and to set up standing and ad hoc working groups to consider the issues regularly arising at political and official levels.
