Press release, 10 September 2012
Seimas Speaker Mrs Irena Degutienė noted that this Seimas session would be unique by the very fact that the Seimas would work for a month and a half up until and throughout the parliamentary elections. In the mid-November, the President will convene the newly-elected Seimas.
The Speaker called on the Seimas members to concentrate and work in accord from the very first day. "I wish you the concentration which helped our sportsmen in London Olympics to achieve the best results during all of 22 years of our independence. Let us learn from our Olympic athletes, and thanking them for their great performance and the example shown, let us nobly get set on our election marks," Mrs Degutienė said.
The Speaker expressed her hope that the current reconstruction in the historical Seimas buildings would not interfere with constructive parliamentary work.
"At the moment, historical Building I undergoes reconstruction and renovation and consequently one more part of the Parliament will be reclaimed from the gloomy Soviet past. With the work completed, I hope, we will not only be able to receive, in an appropriate and orderly environment, guests coming to the Parliament during the Lithuanian Presidency of the EU Council but also to significantly save on heating or electricity which have been wasted so far in leaky buildings," Mrs Degutienė said.
The Speaker also read out the letter of Lithuanian President Ms Dalia Grybauskaitė to the current-term Seimas members.
