Seimas members approved by consensus draft Law No XIP-4512 on Amending Articles 24 and 37 of the Law on Elections to the European Parliament*.
The purpose of this Law is to transpose the provisions of Council Directive 93/109/EC of 6 December 1993, into our national law in order to avoid overlap in candidacies and voting during European Parliament elections and to properly fulfil our commitments to the European Union.
The draft in question proposes to adjust personal information used in Lithuanian electoral rolls drawn up for holding elections to the European Parliament, that is, to no longer use personal information about an earlier place of a persons residence in any other EU Member State or the home Member State but instead use information about the locality or constituency in his home Member State on the electoral roll of which his name was last entered, as defined by the European Directive.
It is also proposed that, in a questionnaire of a candidate in elections to the European Parliament, a citizen of another EU Member State should additionally identify the locality or constituency in a Member State on the electoral roll of which his name was last entered.
The Committee on State Administration and Local Authorities was appointed as the principal committee for considering this issue, the consideration at the plenary being scheduled on 25 September 2012.
