Seimas Speaker: "We are happy to revive slightly weakened parliamentary relations between Lithuania and Germany”

Press release, 20 September 2012

Seimas Speaker Mrs Irena Degutienë received Mr Ruprecht Polenz, Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs of the German Bundestag. Their discussion centred on bilateral cooperation, EU foreign policy affairs and Eastern Neighbourhood issues.

The Speaker recalled her visit to Germany and meetings at the Bundestag. “I am happy that the meetings at the Bundestag during my visit to Germany this spring helped to revive slightly weakened bilateral parliamentary relations. We are also pleased that politicians from Germany –– one of the leading European Union countries –– come to Lithuania more often,” Mrs Degutienë said.

The Chairman of the Bundestag Committee on Foreign Affairs noted that since the Angela Merkel-led government had taken the helm, Germany returned to Helmut Kohl’s preferred policy of maintaining close ties not only with the biggest countries but also with smaller partners. “This allows us to cultivate our friendship because only lasting friendship enables to avoid more serious problems,” Mr Polenz said.
