Speaker of the Seimas Arūnas Valinskas received Ambassador of Sri Lanka Ranjith Pemsiri Jayasooriya.
The Seimas Speaker expressed a hope that accreditation of a new ambassador to Lithuania would be a new step in developing regular relations and mutually useful cooperation between the countries. Mr. Valinskas also noted that the formation of an interparliamentary relations group had already started in the Seimas.
The meeting touched upon potential contact points between Lithuania and Sri Lanka in the spheres of tourism, trade, and investment. The Head of the Parliament emphasised that, talking about cooperation in the tourism sector, notice should be definitely taken of travellers security and current political unrest in Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka is like a bridge for Lithuanias investments to the Far East, Mr. Valinskas said. The Speaker of the Seimas also asked Sri Lanka to support candidate of the Baltic States Ina Marčiulionytė to the post of UNESCO Director General in the approaching elections.
