The Speaker of the Seimas received the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Sweden

22 January

Speaker of the Seimas Arūnas Valinskas received Ambassador of the Kingdom of Sweden Ulrika Eva Maria Cronenberg-Mossberg.

The meeting touched upon the most important issues of bilateral and multilateral cooperation. The Head of the Parliament noted that concerning Lithuania’s and Sweden’s relations the issues of energy, security, and European Union Eastern Neighbourhood are the most relevant ones.

“Time is money, we are therefore interested in laying the electricity link to Sweden as soon as possible. “Swedlink” plays a significant role in ensuring energy security of Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia after decommissioning Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant. Instead of linking countries, we should link Baltic and Nordic energy markets, thus we should move towards a common energy market of the Baltic countries,” Mr. Valinskas said.

The Speaker of the Seimas pointed out the importance of regular meetings of Baltic and Nordic countries. More significance has been given to regional security issues.

“We are ready to support Sweden if the authorities decide to join NATO,” said the Head of the Parliament.

The Speaker of the Seimas and the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Sweden also discussed the EU Eastern Neighbourhood Policy and the importance of dissemination of European civilisation values in the region. Mr. Valinskas thanked for Sweden’s financial support to the European Humanities University.
