Speaker of the Seimas discussed bilateral issues with Marshal of the Polish Sejm

27 February

While participating in the Conference of the Speakers of the European Union Parliaments held in Paris, the Speaker of the Seimas met with Head of the Polish Sejm Bronisław Komorowski. During the bilateral meeting the Heads of the Parliaments discussed topical bilateral issues.

During the meeting Arūnas Valinskas pointed out that the new Seimas and the Government of Lithuania have all intentions on continuing focusing on the strategic partnership between the countries and the problem solving.

“I am well aware of the fact that the settlement of certain issues would help create a better atmosphere in the bilateral relations and contribute to the development of our strategic partnership,” Speaker of the Lithuanian Parliament said.

Arūnas Valinskas and Bronisław Komorowski discussed the issue of the Polish Card, and the problems relating to the writing of double surnames. The Head of the Parliament emphasised that the issue of writing a person’s name is relevant not only for the representatives of Polish minorities, but also for other Lithuanian citizens.

What concerns the cooperation in the energy sector, Arūnas Valinskas highlighted that Lithuania still appreciates Poland as its strategic partner in the project of the new nuclear power plant.

“The current economic situation urges us to reiterate the fact that the partnership in the energy sector is much more important than politicising certain bilateral issues,“ Head of the Lithuanian Seimas said.

The Speakers of Lithuanian and Polish Parliaments agreed to meet in the nearest future and thus speed up the settlement of bilateral issues.
