Speaker of the Seimas discusses bilateral relations together with the Austrian President

13 March

The meeting of Speaker of the Seimas Arūnas Valinskas and President of the Republic of Austria Heinz Fischer who paid an official visit to Lithuania focused on the bilateral relations in the sphere of energy and economy.

According to the Head of the Parliament, Lithuania values Austria’s experience gained in the sphere of alternative energy sources. “I appreciate the fact that your specialists agreed to share their experiences with Lithuania. We hope that you will help us become a more ecological country,” Head of the Seimas said.

Mr. Valinskas and Mr. Fischer unanimously agreed that the economic cooperation should be more active, in particular in the face of the economic crisis.

The Speaker of the Seimas was grateful to Austria for the support it showed when dealing with issues at the European Union level, and noted that this is particularly important in order to further maintain the principle of solidarity amongst the EU Member States. Arūnas Valinskas held the view that adherence to a common opinion will help avoid a situation where priorities are given for the States’ own purposes, instead of looking for the solutions corresponding to common EU interests.

The Head of the Parliament informed about a Group for Parliamentary Relations with Austria formed in the Seimas and expressed his hope that the same group will be formed in the Austrian Parliament.
