Media release of 16 April 2009
Speaker of the Seimas Arūnas
Valinskas met with President of the Republic of Poland Lech Kaczyński on
his official visit to Lithuania.
The meeting focused on the common
interests of the countries, membership in NATO and the EU.
Today we have to talk about our
mutual relations in a common transatlantic space, about a common position in
the EU and NATO, energy security and independence of the region, the relations
between Lithuania, Poland and the entire EU and Eastern European countries,
said the Speaker of the Seimas.
The issues of Mažeikių nafta
and electricity links were also touched upon at the meeting. Both the Head of
the Parliament and President of the Republic of Poland agreed that certain
issues of national minorities had to be solved in a constructive way, without
hindering common strategic goals.
There were moments of tension in
the relations between our states, yet they are not relevant any more. Today,
strategic partnership and common work experience are important. We may achieve
a lot if we globally head in the same direction and act together, Mr. Kaczyński
stressed.
Afterwards, the President of the
Republic of Poland delivered a speech at the Seimas.
