Speaker of the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania Irena Degutienė received Ambassador of the USA to the Republic of Lithuania Anne E. Derse.
During the meeting, the strengthening of the bilateral relations, economic cooperation and encouragement of US investment in Lithuania were discussed.
The Speaker of the Seimas emphasised that since the restoration of its independence, Lithuania has been implementing a coherent foreign policy, one of the main priorities of which has been strategic partnership relations with the USA. According to the Head of the Parliament, it is essential to further adhere to strategic priorities of the Lithuanian foreign policy and continue working, especially in the field of strengthening of security.
Lithuania will feel safer if the USA manage to maintain and strengthen their cooperation with the European Union. Through our cooperation, it will be easier to achieve the goals significant for the global democratic community as well as for Lithuania, Irena Degutienė said.
The Speaker of the Seimas highlighted that today it is essential to take into account the new geopolitical and economic circumstances and to search for new forms of cooperation together.
It is very important for Lithuania and our people to feel the support of the USA and to observe actual signs of cooperation in various fields. I believe that a closer cooperation and common priorities between state authorities as well as scientists and students, employees engaged in cultural activities and experts is very much necessary for Lithuania and the USA, Mrs. Degutienė claimed.
The Head of the Parliament believes that the possibilities of organising conferences of high level experts, implementing common projects of US and Lithuanian analytical centres and introducing new initiatives in the field of interparliamentary relations should be considered.
The Speaker of the Seimas highlighted that strategic political relations between Lithuania and the USA are not enough.
We have to seek to enhance the political cooperation by stronger economic relations. I hope that the US business has much more possibilities of investing in Lithuania, Irena Degutienė said. The head of the Parliament expressed her opinion that the USA would be particularly interested in the Lithuanian achievements in the field of information technologies, laser technologies and biotechnologies.
Ambassador Anne E. Derse emphasised that the USA appreciates Lithuania as one of the main partners in Europe and noted that the state she represents is ready to implement all bilateral obligations, which it had assumed earlier. The Ambassador of the USA expressed her gratitude to the Speaker of the Seimas for a particularly significant contribution and professionalism of the representatives of our country while leading the Team of Provincial Reconstruction in Afghanistan.
