Speaker Irena Degutienė met with Staffan Nilsson, President of the European Economic and Social Committee, on 18 November 2010.
A brief meeting focused on EU 2020 Strategy which is the European strategy for sustainable growth, Lithuanias national reform programme, more active engagement of society in dealing with economic and social issues, and other urgent European challenges.
It is nice to have an opportunity to discuss with you the most critical matters not only inside but outside conference halls too. Our first meeting and exchange of views is a good introduction to the conference to be held in the Seimas tomorrow, where all the challenges and problems will be treated in more detail, I. Degutienė said.
The Seimas Speaker and the President of the European Economic and Social Committee have taken part in the conference hosted by the Seimas on the impact of the crisis on employment in the Baltic countries. The conference aims at the assessment of social sides of the downturn and at discussion of measures that have been employed by Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia in fighting the crisis.
