26 March 2010
Speaker of the
Seimas, Irena Degutienė,
met with the recently appointed Ambassador of the Czech Republic, Radek Pech. Among other things, assessment of totalitarian
regimes at the EU level was discussed.
The Seimas Speaker underlined that evaluation of the Soviet and
Nazi totalitarianism implies much more than just declaration of achievement of
historical justice. I. Degutienė noted, Lithuania
sincerely supports and highly values the Czech initiative to establish the
Platform of European Memory and Conscience, which could give proper assessment
of Nazi as well as Soviet crimes. You can come across a big number of
people in Western Europe who have no idea and
understanding under what horrific regime we were for decades, and what crimes
were perpetrated against Lithuanian, Czech, Latvian, Estonian, Hungarian and
other people.
