Speaker of the Seimas Commences Her Visit to the US. Head of the Lithuanian Parliament Expects Cooperation and Coordinated Political Activities to Facilitate the Protection of the Interests of Smaller States

Mrs Irena Degutienė, Speaker of the Seimas, has commenced her visit to Washington (USA). The Speaker of the Seimas has noted that the aim of the visit is not only to strengthen political relations between Lithuania and the US but also to further enhance the process of Nordic-Baltic cooperation.

 

“We must intensify a growing economic cooperation among the USA, the Baltic States, and Nordic countries through closer political ties and people-to-people contacts. Only by ensuring firm support and active political engagement can we expect that the interests of smaller states, such as Lithuania, will be considered when addressing bilateral relations of big states,” Mrs Degutienė said.

 

The Speaker of the Seimas is meeting with Mr John Shimkus, Member of the US House of Representatives, in the US capital on 26 May 2010 and taking part in the discussion of the Nordic and Baltic Speakers Enhancing US-Nordic-Baltic Partnership: Parliamentary Prospects.

 

The meeting of Mrs Degutienė and Nordic-Baltic speakers with Ms Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Mr Howard L. Berman, Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs, the leadership of the International Republican Institute, and other high US officials is scheduled for 27 May 2010. The Speaker of the Seimas is also to visit Baltimore and meet with the local Lithuanian community.

 

Mrs Degutienė is returning to Vilnius on 29 May 2010.
