Press release,
26 May 2010
Mrs Irena
Degutienė, Speaker of the Seimas, has commenced her visit to Washington (USA). The
Speaker of the Seimas has noted that the aim of the visit is not only to
strengthen political relations between Lithuania
and the US
but also to further enhance the process of Nordic-Baltic cooperation.
We must
intensify a growing economic cooperation among the USA,
the Baltic States, and Nordic countries
through closer political ties and people-to-people contacts. Only by
ensuring firm support and active political engagement can we expect that the
interests of smaller states, such as Lithuania, will be considered when
addressing bilateral relations of big states, Mrs Degutienė said.
The Speaker of
the Seimas is meeting with Mr John Shimkus, Member of the US House of
Representatives, in the US
capital on 26 May 2010 and taking part in the discussion of the Nordic and
Baltic Speakers Enhancing US-Nordic-Baltic Partnership: Parliamentary
Prospects.
The meeting of
Mrs Degutienė and Nordic-Baltic speakers with Ms Nancy Pelosi, Speaker
of the US House of Representatives, Mr Howard L. Berman, Chairman of the
Committee on Foreign Affairs, the leadership of the International Republican
Institute, and other high US officials is scheduled for 27 May 2010. The
Speaker of the Seimas is also to visit Baltimore
and meet with the local Lithuanian community.
Mrs Degutienė is
returning to Vilnius
on 29 May 2010.
