Speaker of the Seimas condemns racist and chauvinist episodes

Press Release, 20 April 2011

Mrs Irena Degutienė, Speaker of the Seimas, has vehemently condemned the Wednesday’s racist and chauvinist attacks. She will demand that responsible institutions undertake all appropriate actions to prevent similar incidents in the future. The Speaker conveyed her position via her Spokesman Juozas Ruzgys.

“The Speaker resolutely condemns such repeatedly occurring racist and chauvinist attacks like those of today. In Mrs Degutienė’s view, such incidents serve to discredit any healthy patriotism and nationalism”, Mr Ruzgys says.

According to him, the Speaker of the Seimas hopes that with the prie-trial investigation having started, the police and other law-enforcement institutions will disclose the organisers and perpetrators of these attacks and the latter will be brought to justice.

“Mrs Degutienė will also demand that responsible law-enforcement institutions do not only react to the provocations but also take all the proactive measures to prevent such nasty incidents in the future”, the Spokesman communicated the Speaker’s position.
