During her official visit to the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, Mrs Irena Degutienë, Speaker of the Seimas, said that the leadership of Luxembourg was well aware of Lithuania’s concerns over the nuclear projects planned at the Lithuanian border, which were developed with insufficient transparency and without properly informing the neighbouring states and society on them. The Speaker of the Seimas made this statement following the meetings with Mr Laurent Mosar, President of the Chamber of Deputies of Luxembourg, and Mr Jean Claude Juncker, Prime Minister of Luxembourg.

“Luxembourg’s officials highlighted that they fully understood Lithuania’s concerns over the nuclear power plant construction projects implemented at our border because several nuclear power plants were also located just outside the Duchy of Luxembourg raising quite a lot of doubts and uncertainties about their safety”, Mrs Degutienë said.

The Speaker of the Seimas underscored that Luxembourg’s side had approved of Lithuania’s position to seek the adherence to the strictest safety requirements and international conventions in the area of all nuclear energy development.

“Lithuania’s goal is that the projects for the construction of nuclear power plants planned in Belarus and Russia’s Kaliningrad Region are implemented strictly adhering to all international nuclear safety, radiation protection and environmental standards, in particular the Convention on Environmental Impact Assessment in a Transboundary Context”, Mrs Degutienë spoke.

The Speaker of the Seimas thanked Luxembourg’s leaders for their support and called on them to make joint efforts for the transparency and publicity of these and similar projects.

“The nuclear power plants are constructed at the external border of the European Union and extremely close to the capital of Lithuania. Therefore, it is urgent to draw the attention of all European Union Member States and the European Commission as well as international organisations to the lack of transparency of and information on these projects,” Ms Degutienë said.
