This week in the Seimas: two international conferences to mark the EU Anti-Trafficking Day

On 17-18 October 2013, two international conferences will be organised in the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania in the framework of the Lithuanian Presidency of the Council of the European Union to mark the seventh EU Anti-Trafficking Day.

On 17 October 2013, the Ministry of the Interior of the Republic of Lithuania, in cooperation with the Committee on Legal Affairs of the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania, the European Institute for Crime Prevention and Control, affiliated with the United Nations, the Task Force against Trafficking in Human Beings of the Council of the Baltic Sea States and the University of Tartu, will organise a conference “ADSTRINGO – Addressing trafficking in human beings for labour exploitation through improved partnerships, enhanced diagnostics and intensified organisational approaches.” This is a side event to the Conference of 18 October 2013.The number of participants is limited.

On 18 October 2013, the Ministry of the Interior of the Republic of Lithuania, in cooperation with the Committee on Legal Affairs of the Seimas and the European Commission, will organise a conference at the Conference Hall of the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania, entitled Exploring the Links between the Internet and Trafficking in Human Beings: Cyberspace for Prevention, not Recruitment. Approximately 150 representatives from the European Commission, the European Parliament, the EU Member States, the Baltic Sea Region, international organisations, research, business, and civil society are expected to attend.

The Conference will discuss the use of the Internet for recruiting the victims of human trafficking, the solutions to the problem of demand in the cyber space, the campaigns for raising public awareness and other ways of prevention; in addition, the debate will cover investigation into crimes and criminal persecution as well as provision of e-services to victims of human trafficking.

Session 1 of the Conference will be opened by Loreta Graužinienė, Speaker of the Seimas, followed by Alfonsas Dailis Barakauskas, Minister of the Interior; Julius Sabatauskas, Chair of the Seimas Committee on Legal Affairs; and Myria Vassiliadou, EU Anti-Trafficking Coordinator from the European Commission. The keynote address will be made by Donna Hughes, Professor at University of Rhode Island, the USA.

Session 2 of the Conference will consist of discussions in three working groups attended by politicians, businessmen, experts, representatives of law enforcement bodies as well as international and civil society organisations. The programme of the event is available here.

Session 1 of the Conference (9 a.m. to 9.40 p.m.) will be broadcast live on the TV programme „Seimas – tiesiogiai“.
