Committee on European Affairs approved the Seimas as the venue of all parliamentary events of the Lithuanian Presidency of the Council
On 27 June 2012, the Seimas Committee on European Affairs considered the information by the Government and the Office of the Seimas about the preparation for the Lithuanian Presidency of the Council of the EU in 2013. The Committee noted considerable progress made and in principle approved the organisational chart and calendar of parliamentary events preliminarily scheduled by the Secretary General of the Seimas for the Lithuanian Presidency. The Committee approved the Seimas as the venue of all parliamentary dimension events to be organised during the Lithuanian Presidency of the Council of the EU.
The Committee also decided to encourage the Government to resolve the problem of international flights to and from Lithuania as promptly as possible, to utilise the allocation for the VIP Hall in an appropriate manner so as to ensure high quality of works at the Vilnius International Airport.
The Municipality of Vilnius City will be asked to improve the city infrastructure with a particular focus on the road from the Vilnius International Airport to the city centre as this would contribute to the positive image of the city and its culture; to take note of the poor quality of taxi service that needs further attention, for example, taxi drivers should accept bank cards; and to consider a decision on the reconstruction of the Independence Square and the fountain there.
Among other things, the Committee concluded that the Committees on European Affairs of the Irish and Hellenic Parliaments might be invited to engage in cooperation on political and expert levels.
