Remit and scope of activities of the Seimas Committee on European Affairs

The remit and the scope of activities of the Seimas Committee on European Affairs are established under the Statute of the Seimas. Pursuant to the Statute, powers of the Committee on European Affairs cover:

1) consideration of the European Union matters falling within the competence of the Seimas and established by the Statute of the Seimas;

2) ensuring sovereignty and implementation of the rights and duties of the membership of the Republic of Lithuania of the European Union;

3) ensuring appropriate representation of the interests of the Republic of Lithuania in the European Union;

4) representation of the Seimas in the Conference of Parliamentary Committees for Union Affairs (COSAC) and coordination of representation of the Seimas in conferences organised by the EU institutions on specific areas of international cooperation;

5) cooperation with the European Parliament, other institutions of the European Union, Committees on European Affairs of national Parliaments of the European Union Member States and other European countries;

6) involvement in the activities related to planning and performance of actions for the implementation of strategies of the European Union, to the implementation of important regional projects of European integration (especially those related to infrastructure), to the use of structural funds, and to matters concerning the participation of Lithuania in the activities of institutions of the European Union.

Moreover, the Committee on European Affairs:

  1. participates in the process of the preparation and evaluation of positions of the Republic of Lithuania concerning legislative acts of the European Union, as defined in the Statute of the Seimas, where necessary presents opinions of the Seimas regarding the positions to the Government and evaluates the presentation of the positions in the institutions of the European Union;
  2. supervises timely and proper adoption of draft laws implementing legal acts of the European Union;
  3. coordinates the activities of the committees of the Seimas in their consideration of European Union matters and presentation of conclusions thereon;
  4. organises debates on key items on the agenda of the European Union in plenary sittings of the Seimas;

performs other functions related to the provision of information to the public regarding the European Union.
