Speeches

Speech by Loreta Graužinienė, Speaker of the Seimas, at the ceremony of hoisting the flags of the three Baltic States

Press release, 11 March 2014

Ladies and Gentlemen,

The recent events in Ukraine force each and every one of us to reassess the importance of freedom and remember what our nation had to survive for the independence of Lithuania. They remind us of those people whose determination, courage and self-sacrifice made it possible for us to celebrate the 11th of March.

Being free, we can develop spiritually, reach our goals without any constraints, foster our culture and show to the entire world how viable and strong our country is.

So even today as we are listening to our national anthem, it touches our hearts. The national flag flying above us stands as a sign of the nation and the state which keeps reminding us that wherever we may go, this is Lithuania and this is our home.

The flags of the other Baltic States flying next to ours is not merely a sign of friendship. They mark our road to freedom that we came along together in unity.

Dear citizens, happy anniversary! Happy Independence Day!
