Press release, 14 March 2014
Lithuania is ready to assist Serbia in chairing the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) in 2015. Gediminas Kirkilas, Deputy Speaker of the Seimas and Chair of the Committee on European Affairs, at the meeting with Radojk Bogojeviã, Ambassador of the Republic of Serbia, on 14 March 2014 underlined that our country is already experienced in the field since it successfully chaired the OSCE in 2011 and held the presidency of the Council of the EU in second half of 2013.
“Resumed formal negotiations 5+2 on the settlement of the conflict in Moldova after a five-year break is probably the major achievement of the Lithuanian chairmanship of the OSCE. This is how we gained our invaluable experience in management of regional crises, diplomatic negotiations and international mediation. Therefore we are willing to share our practical experience with Serbia, which during its OSCE chairmanship, will try to peacefully settle the frozen conflicts in the South Caucasus, Transdniestria, Western Balkans and now the conflict in Ukraine,” Kirkilas said.
Cyber security and energy security, transparency of military forces, freedom of media and better protection of journalists were listed among other priorities of the Lithuanian OSCE chairmanship in 2011. In 2015, Serbia is determined to implement the decision of the Vilnius Ministerial Council on better coordination of OSCE actions when addressing transnational threats (including greater OSCE engagement in cyber security issues) and the Vilnius Ministerial Council decision on enhancing OSCE capabilities through all stages of a conflict cycle.
