Press release, 30 May 2014
Andriy Parubiy,
Secretary of the National Security and Defence Council of Ukraine, was of the
opinion that the crisis which is currently underway in Ukraine is not just a
Ukrainian–Russian crisis. It is not just about an aggression of Russia against
Ukraine. This is a global crisis. “When Putin made a statement that the
collapse of the Soviet Union was the biggest geopolitical tragedy in the 20th century,
he made it clear that he sought to restore the influence that the USSR had back
in those years,” said Mr Parubiy. According to him, Putin calls into question
the whole system of security not just in Europe, but in the whole civilised
world. “He is trying to change borders and draw new dividing lines. Therefore,
this is a challenge for all of us, this is a challenge to the entire civilised
world,” stressed the Secretary of the National Security and Defence Council of Ukraine.
Andriy Parubiy pointed
out that in the days right before the presidential elections, the terrorists
and combatants, who came from Russia, did everything possible to disrupt the
election in Ukraine. “The cynical and aggressive attempts of Russia to derail
stability in Ukraine failed. […] The elections showed that Ukraine is united
and has a shared vision concerning its European future,” said the speaker. He
assured that neither Russia nor Putin would manage to split up Ukrainian
society and to instigate internal infighting.
The Secretary of the
National Security and Defence Council of Ukraine also emphasised the important
information warfare that Russia was waging against Ukraine. “The information
warfare is one component of the overall war they are waging against Ukraine and
it has a global dimension. We all have to meet their challenge, because very
often distorted facts which have nothing to do with reality are presented not only
to Russian audiences but also to European audiences,” stated Mr Parubiy.
The speaker from
Ukraine admitted that the crisis was still going on. “At this stage, what we
need is not just advisory assistance and expertise, we need support from
states, Ukraine also badly needs specific practical support,” claimed Andriy
Parubiy.
