Biography

Born on 30 August 1951 in Vilnius, into a family of an engineer and a teacher. Besides him, there were two more brothers and four sisters in the family.

Finished School 23 in Vilnius. Served in the Soviet Navy. In 1972 worked at the Monument Restoration Trust as an interior restorer. Studied the Lithuanian language and literature at Vilnius Teachers' Training College (currently the University of Pedagogic) by correspondence. In 1982 worked in the structures of the Central Committee (CK) of the Lithuanian Communist Party (LCP), in 1986 - at the Department of Culture of the CP LCP, was the First Assistant to the Secretary. During the time of the Rebirth supported the Party's secession from the CPSU.

In 1990 - elected Secretary of the CK LCP, and some months later, at the Constituent assembly of the Lithuanian Democratic Labour Party was elected Deputy chairman of this party. In 1993 temporarily acted as Chairman of the Party. Edited and published the daily "Golos Litvy" ("The Voice of Lithuania") in Russian.

Member of the Seimas since 1992. Was Chairman of the Seimas National Security Committee and Deputy Head of the Lithuanian Democratic Labour Party Parliamentary Group. Since 1993 - Head of the Seimas Lithuanian Democratic Labour Party Parliamentary Group and a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee, Chairman of the Seimas Delegation to the North Atlantic Assembly.

In 1995 published the book "Political Commentary for the Period", published over 400 articles in periodicals.

Hobbies - tennis and philosophy.

Speaks English and Russian.

Wife Liudmila. The family has son Rolandas and daughter Diana.
