Biography
Born in Anykščiai region, the village of Papiliai on 17 February, 1950.
Finished Troškūnai secondary school in 1967. In 1972 graduated form the Department of Economics of Vilnius University as an economist mathematician. Doctor of Social Sciences. In 1972-1984 worked at the Research Institute National Economy and Economics of the State Planning Committee of the Republic of Lithuania. In 1984-1989 - a reader at the Vilnius Engineering Construction Institute (currently - Gediminas Technical University). In 1989 - senior research worker at the Institute of Economics of the Academy of Sciences. In 1990-1992 - a deputy of the Supreme Council - the Reconstituent Seimas. 10 January - 13 January, 1991 - Prime Minister of the Republic of Lithuania. In May 1991 - Minister of Economics of the Republic of Lithuania. 1992-1996 - Deputy Director, senior research worker of the Institute of Economics and Privatisation. Member of the Lithuanian Christian Democratic Party, a member of its Board. Speaks English and French. Married. Wife Valerija is an economist. The family has three sons. Member of the Seimas delegation to the Interparliamentary Union. Member of the Parliamentary Group for the Relations with the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Member of the Parliamentary Group for the Relations with Italy. Member of the Parliamentary Group for the Relations with the Ukraine.
