Biography
Born in Kupiškis region, the village of Urnėniškiai, on 7 February 1930, into a large family of peasants with 12 children.
Started his activities in the field of agriculture in 1948. In 1949 entered a two-year school of agriculture of Vabalninkas and upon its graduation from the autumn of 1952 till the spring of 1953 worked in Biržai region as a chief zootechnician. In 1953 - Head of Širvena collective-farm. In 1955 - Director of Parovėja Machine-tractor station. In 1957-1959 - a student at Vilnius College of Agriculture Mechanisation. Worked in Biržai region as Director, Deputy Director of the Executive Committee, Head of the Agriculture Inspection, in 1961 - Chairman of the Planning Commission. In 1965 graduated from the Department of Economics of the Lithuanian Academy of Agriculture by correspondence. Worked at agricultural enterprises. In 1969 appointed head of the Department of Agriculture of the Lithuanian State Planning Committee, in 1970 - Deputy Minister of Purveyance. In 1981-1985 - Minister of Fruit and Vegetables of the Lithuanian SSR. In 1985-1988 - First Deputy Minister of the State Agro-Industrial Committee. In 1988-1989 - Chairman of the State Nature Protection Committee. In October of 1989 - Director of Fruit, Vegetable and Flower Association. A merited agronomist of the Lithuanian SSR. In 1993-1994 - Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the Republic of Lithuania to Kazakhstan, in 1994-1996 - Minister of Agriculture. A member of the Seimas since 1995. Was a member of the CPSU, currently a member of the Lithuanian Democratic Labour Party. Speaks Russian. Married. The family has a daughter. A member of the Seimas Delegation to the Interparliamentary Union. A member of the Parliamentary Delegation for the Relations with Taiwan.
