Born on 1 November 1945 in Ukmergė region, the village of Užkulėnis into a family of farmers. Father was killed in 1945. Grandson of Ignas Smetona, brother of Antanas Smetona, President of the Republic of Lithuania (1919-1920, 1926-1940).

In 1965 finished Ukmergė Technical College of Agriculture Mechanisation.

In 1977 - graduated from Leningrad (Saint Petersburg) Institute of Theatre, Music and Cinematography. Acquired the specialisation of TV producer.

In 1967-1972 - worked as assistant director at the Lithuanian Cinema Studio.

In 1972-1991 - a TV and cinema producer at Lithuanian TV. Created many documentary and musical TV films.

In 1990-1997 - Chairman of the Lithuanian National Union.

In 1990-1992 - editor of the newspaper "Viltis."

In 1997-1999 - Chairman of the National Democratic Movement for Lithuania's Independence.

From 1999 - Chairman of the Lithuanian National Democratic Party.

In 1997 - a candidate to the post of the President of the Republic of Lithuania.

Speaks Russian and German languages.

Married. Has two daughters.
