Biography
Born on 1 November 1945 in Ukmergė region, the village of Užkulėnis into a family of farmers. Father was killed in 1945. Grandson of Ignas Smetona, brother of Antanas Smetona, President of the Republic of Lithuania (1919-1920, 1926-1940).
In 1965 finished Ukmergė Technical College of Agriculture Mechanisation. In 1977 - graduated from Leningrad (Saint Petersburg) Institute of Theatre, Music and Cinematography. Acquired the specialisation of TV producer. In 1967-1972 - worked as assistant director at the Lithuanian Cinema Studio. In 1972-1991 - a TV and cinema producer at Lithuanian TV. Created many documentary and musical TV films. In 1990-1997 - Chairman of the Lithuanian National Union. In 1990-1992 - editor of the newspaper "Viltis." In 1997-1999 - Chairman of the National Democratic Movement for Lithuania's Independence. From 1999 - Chairman of the Lithuanian National Democratic Party. In 1997 - a candidate to the post of the President of the Republic of Lithuania. Speaks Russian and German languages. Married. Has two daughters. Member of the Seimas Delegation to the Interparliamentary Union. Member of the Seimas Delegation to the Baltic Assembly. Chairman of the Parliamentary Group for the Relations with the Republic of Latvia. Member of the Parliamentary Relations Group of Lithuania and the Republic of Austria. Member of the Parliamentary Group for the Relations with the Czech Republic. Member of the Parliamentary Group for the Relations with France. Member of the Parliamentary Group for the Relations with North European Countries (Denmark, Iceland, Norway, Finland, Sweden). Member of the Parliamentary Group for the Relations with the Ukraine. Member of the Parliamentary Group for the Relations with the Federal Republic of Germany.
