Biography

Born in Varėna region, the village of Pabaronė on 25 June 1935, into the family of peasants.

Attended school in Varėna and Vilnius. In 1965 graduated from Vilnius University as a journalist. In 1957-1969 worked in editorial offices of Eišiškiai and Varėna regions newspapers. In 1969-1990 - a Secretary of the Council of the Executive Committee of Varėna region.

In 1958 took part in the activities of the Lithuanian Reform Movement Sąjūdis. Was a member of the initiative group of Varėna region, a member of the Sąjūdis regional Council, chairman of its Committee of Culture.

In 1990-1992 - a deputy of the Supreme Council - the Reconstituent Seimas. Worked in the Self-government Commission, was Deputy Chairman of the Subcommittee of Eastern Lithuanian of the Commission on State Regional Problems.

Member of the Seimas since 1992.

Takes part in ethnographic activities. In 1983 published the book "Varėna region." Takes interest in the culture of Eastern Lithuania.

In 1963-1990 - a member of the CPSU, later - a member of the Lithuanian Communist Party. A member of the Homeland Union (Lithuanian Conservatives) since 1993.

Speaks Russian and Polish.

Married. Wife Valerija is a bibliographer. The family has two sons.

Member of the Seimas Delegation to the Assembly of Members of the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania and the Sejm of the Republic of Poland.
