Biography

Born on 14 February 1948 in the village of Didžiokai, the region of Molėtai, into a family of an organist.

Finished Molėtai secondary school. In 1965-1969 studied economics at Vilnius University, the speciality of industry planning. Worked as a teacher of political economics at Vilnius University. In 1970 became a post graduate student. In 1974 defended the thesis and was awarded the degree of Candidate of Economic Sciences (currently Doctor of Social Sciences). In 1982-1983 was on a study visit in Norway, the city of Bergen. Since 1989 - Head of the Department of Production Management and International Economic Relations. Doctor of Economics (1990), Professor (1991). Member of the Seimas since 1992. In 1992-1996 -Minister of Foreign Affairs.

Was a member of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union.

After the Lithuanian Communist Party has established, worked as Secretary of its Central Committee.

One of the founders of the Lithuanian Democratic Labour Party, a member of the Presidium of the Council of the Lithuanian Democratic Labour Party, first Deputy Chairman of the Party.

Speaks English, Russian and Polish.

Wife Nijolė works at the "Mintis" Publishing House.

The family has two sons.

A member of the Seimas Delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.

A member of the Seimas Delegation to the Interparliamentary Union.

A member of the Parliamentary Group for the Relations with the USA.

A member of the Parliamentary Group for the Relations with Greece and Cyprus

A member of the Parliamentary Group for the Relations with the Russian Federation.

A member of the Parliamentary Group for the Relations with North European Countries (Denmark, Norway, Finland, Sweden).
