Biography
Born in Druskininkai on 31 October 1958.
Finished Druskininkai secondary school No.1. At the same time finished a seven-year children's musical school, a six-year children and youth's sports school and a correspondence school of mathematicians at the Department of Mathematics of Vilnius University. Studied medicine at Kaunas Institute of Medicine (currently the University of Medicine) and at Vilnius University. In 1983 started work at the Heart and Blood-vessels Surgery Laboratory of Vilnius University. In 1987 - doctor of medical sciences, in 1992 - Doctor habilis of medical sciences, in 1996 - Professor. In 1995-1996 worked as Head of Health Care, Sanitation and Hygiene Department of Vilnius Self-government. In 1996-1998 - Minister of Health of the eight government. Was awarded prizes and bonuses for his scientific work in New York (1989, 1994) and Berlin (1992). A member of numerous international Blood-vessel Surgery Societies. In 1989-1991 improved his professional qualifications at the Heart and Blood-vessels Surgery Clinics of Bern University in Switzerland, in 1989 - in Prague, in 1991 - in Germany and in 1994 - in the USA. A member of the Homeland Union (Lithuanian Conservatives). The Chairman of the Health Care Committee. Speaks English, Russian and German. Wife Vilija is a biologist. The family has three children. A member of the Seimas Delegation to the Interparliamentary Union. A member of the Parliamentary Group for the Relations with the Federal Republic of Germany.
