Born on 17 April 1948 in Kaunas.
Finished Kaunas "Saulė" school. In 1972 - graduated from Kaunas Medical Institute (currently - Medical University). A biophysicist. In 1972-1977 - a junior research worker at the Institute of Mathematics and Cybernetics of the Academy of Sciences. In 1977-1982 - a senior teacher at the Lithuanian Academy of Agriculture. In 1982-1986 - a senior research worker at the Institute Biological Study of Chemical Compounds of Kaunas Branch. In 1986-1990 - worked at the Central Research Laboratory of Kaunas Medical Institute, a senior research worker at the Laboratory of Neurosurgery. In 1988-1990 - Chairman of the Political Commission of the Sąjūdis Seimas. In 1990 - Deputy to the Supreme Council - the Reconstituent Seimas. From March 1990 till December 1992 - Foreign Minister of the First Government (XXII) of the re-established independent Republic of Lithuania Member of the Seimas since 1992. Chairman of the Lithuanian Christian Democratic Party. Foreign Minister of the Government (XXIX) Republic of Lithuania since 1996. Speaks English. Polish, French and Russian languages. Married. Has a daughter and a son. Member of the Seimas Delegation to the Interparliamentary Union.
