The Speaker of the Seimas stresses that Russian aggression and occupation of Ukrainian territories can neither be acknowledged nor legitimised by any compromise, and that support for Ukraine must not only be continued, but also strengthened. ‘We must clearly identify the aggressor and categorically condemn the occupation and annexation of Ukrainian territories,’ Mr Olekas said, emphasising that even with a ceasefire, there can be no return to normal relations with Russia.

According to him, it is imperative to tighten sanctions against Russia, ensure accountability for war crimes, use frozen Russian assets for Ukraine’s reconstruction, and continue to provide military, financial, and political support. Lithuania has allocated 1.6 billion euros to Ukraine since the start of the full-scale aggression, with military support alone set to reach 1 billion euros this year. Lithuania is committed to allocating at least 0.25% of its GDP to Ukraine annually.

The Speaker also highlights Lithuania’s contribution to the reconstruction of Ukraine’s energy infrastructure: as Russia resumes strikes on strategic energy facilities ahead of winter, Lithuanian energy companies are delivering essential equipment for reconstruction and stand ready to continue supplying gas to Ukraine.

Mr Olekas emphasises that not only defence but also hope for the future is vital for peace. Therefore, Lithuania actively supports Ukraine’s goal of joining the European Union by 2030, and the courage, optimism, and faith of Ukrainians continue to inspire the people of Lithuania.

During his visit in Stockholm, the Speaker of the Seimas will also meet with Igor Grosu, Speaker of the Moldovan Parliament, and Julia Klöckner, President of the German Bundestag.
