Scope of Activities
The Committee on European Affairs is responsible for:
- considering key matters pertaining to Lithuania’s membership of the EU and submitting opinions thereon;
- exercising parliamentary scrutiny of the sovereignty of Lithuania as well as the implementation of the rights and obligations arising from Lithuania’s membership of the EU;
- ensuring representation of the interests of the Republic of Lithuania in the EU;
- assisting the Seimas in exercising parliamentary scrutiny of the activities of the Government and other institutions in relation to the planning and implementation of actions for the implementation of the EU strategies; the implementation of European integration projects of regional importance (infrastructure in particular); the use of the European Structural Funds; and matters related to Lithuania’s involvement in the activities of the EU institutions;
- supervising due and timely adoption of laws implementing EU legal acts during the legislative procedure;
- coordinating the activities of the committees and commissions of the Seimas in the consideration of EU matters and presenting conclusions thereon;
- participating in the process of preparation and evaluation of Lithuania’s position on EU legislative proposals;
- submitting, where necessary, conclusions to the Seimas on compliance of EU legislative proposals with the principles of subsidiarity and proportionality; organising debates at plenary sittings of the Seimas about key issues on the EU agenda;
- providing EU-related information to the public.
